Dear Mother

Just a few lines to say I'm keeping well hoping this finds you and all the rest the same. I have been in France over a week now and have written you once before since my arrival. There isnt much accomadation for writing here. I'm doing this on the top of my hat and am sitting in an old sheet iron barn that the Germans built. They were only driven out of this place a few days ago. I haven't been up the line yet but have been route marching for nearly a week on bully beef & Hard tack. A lot of the towns we passed through were in an awful mess. Not a house or building of any kind left standing just a big pile of bricks & stone. Our fellow [censored] and expect to get a little rest. If they do I wont be going in for a while. We have been moving every day so the mail hasn't been dished out. Very likely I'll have some when it is. I hope so any how. We are right under our guns here and Fritz's shells drop quite often and all around.

How is everything at home. Is Hannah back from her holidays yet. I hope dad has a good trip when he gets off to the coast. I was glad to hear that uncle George got off for six weeks. He will be tickled to death. Well mother there isn't much to write about so I will close with love to Hannah Charles Had & Yourself
