France
November 2, 1916
Dear Mother:
We have just come out of the trenches again and I am feeling fine. The weather has been quite drizzly lately and the mud is as thick as ever. I seem to be getting the parcels regular enough. I had one the other night from Aunt Blanche. It came right to the dugout in the trenches and it certainly did go good. I don't know what is the matter with the letters as I have only had one since I arrived in France. I suppose they will all come in a bunch though. Remember those apples you sent. They had started to rot and they spoiled the chocolate and gum but they tasted very good just the same. The billet we are in is quite cosy. There is straw on the floor and a fire place so we are all set for a night any way. And mother you had better send me some powder or something for my little friends as they are getting to be quite a nuisance. But we hope to get a bath and a clean shirt soon. I have just now received a letter from Violet with 3 snaps in it. I haven't seen Art since we went in at the Somme. There isn't much to say now mother so I will close now. I will try and write often now that we are out again. I am going to write to Violet yet to-night. Lots of love to all at home.
Your loving Son Jay
I got the little book of snaps. It is very nice and handy.
