H.M.S. GLORY,
G.P.O. LONDON

2/5/45

Dear Shirley,

Must apologise for not replying to your last letter. I should have got down to writing to you long before this. Haven't any excuse really except that my settled life has been somewhat interrupted my nay new things to look at and learn about and all that sort of thing.

I'm quite enjoying myself on board although I shan't really put my heart in it as I expect to leave fairly soon. That's all I can pay at the moment. Also expect to get down to London for a few days at the end of May. Save up some good weather for me, eh?

Am sharing a cabin with another Canadian, he was a Keyham when I was there. I don't know if you met him. Moose Johnson a tall red headed chap. He's away for a few days now and so life is fairly peaceful. We don't get much work done when we're both in the cabin at the same time. Too much fighting and yarning. Some stooge has turned the heat on, the cabin is like a greenhouse despite swiftly rotating fan.

The war in Europe seems to e nearly finished. Funny, I don't get as much of a thrill out of reading about the death of Hitler or the end of the war, as I thought I would. I guess I've had a pretty easy time of it so that peace time won't be much different for me.

How's life in the B.B.C.? Still working hard as ever? By the way, have you done any swimming yet? I don't think Ill ever get used to the temperature of the water here, after what I was used to last year. Still I may make a brave attempt later on when we get at least four days consecutive summer.

Had a pleasant afternoon on the golf course some days ago. Got into civies and caddied for a pal of mine. Think I must take up golf - it seems to be an interesting game.

Have you been home recently or are you saving up for some good weather?

Well, Shirley, ‘fraid I must end as I have do Engineer's sounds. Be good and write soon.

Lots of Love

Hugh.
