My dear old dad,

Tonight I am going into the trenches for a few days, but this fact should give you no cause for anxiety. I have every reason to believe that things are quiet up there, and the fact that "B" Coy has had no casualties during the whole of the time it has been up the line should be sufficient testimony for us both.

I am sending this to you at the office because I am not letting mother know I am in the trenches this time, leaving it entirely to you to do so if you think fit. In all probability I shall be back here again by the time you get this - so you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the danger (if any) is over 'ere you knew of it.

I shall be meeting Stuart as he is still up there and shall be pleased to see him again.

It will not be out of place if we remind each other that in the Divine care all will be well. With this thought I will close.
