1st C.C.D. No. 3 Coy Witly, Surrey October 22/18 Dear Mother. It must be nearly two weeks now since I last wrote and have only had one letter since then which was dated Sept 8 and have had no mail of any kind latter than that. We moved from Shorncliffe up to hear last week and have been shifting around ever since and hardly know where they are at and this is one awful place. They have the poorest bunch of canteens I have ever come across and the grub is pretty poor too and as I do not feel like eating what they put up have a hard time getting food that suits me and when I parade sick the doctor says [?] just a pain in your belly eh! some phrase for a doctor to make isn't it. I am getting darn well fed up with this outfit and believe that I would sooner be in France than here. I have felt pretty good for the past week but was completely out of sorts the week before last and was nearly being sent to hospital. You will have to excuse my writing as a got a knock on the thumb a few days ago and can hardly use it yet; so that is what makes this so scawly. Mrs. Fred Bernard's brother of [?] is in the same hut as me also [?] who used to work for the Kissacks and Finlaysons is also in the same hut. He came up to me one day and said "you are the fellow who used to work for doctor Millar," but could not place him at that time but remembered him later on. I am no farther ahead now than I was a year ago and do not suppose I will ever be now the way things are going but will try to get another board before I leave here and see if I cannot manage to make B11 out of it, but am afraid my chances are pretty slim. Have had no word from Gordon for quite a while now but all our mail seems to be laid up somewhere or other, especially since we have been moving around. I have not received your parcel but got one from the Willing Workers the other day addressed to the 2nd P.A.C. but it never went to France as it was readdressed at the post office over here and would you thank them for it for me. For some reason or other I do no seem to be able to settle down to writing letters these days either and pretty soon if I do not get any more mail than I have been getting this past few months will not have to do very much letter and keep up to date with my correspondence. I wonder where my birthday this year will find me as the last two was spent in this country and my Xmas' in France. There is an awful lot of flu around here now and the towns close by have been put out of bounds for the present. I never hear of them having it in Canada. Hoping this finds you all well and will be able to write a little better next time Love to all your loving son Gordon
