Dear Mr. Reid,

I must write a line to you but what can I say words cannot express my feeling for you and your family in your recent bereavement.

It is needless for me to say that Spence was a man of the very highest character. After being in the soldier for over two years he hadn't a vice. It was to me more like losing a brother than a friend when Spence was taken

More than one of our brave boys shed tears when they saw him fall. Everybody was his friend and he had no enemies.

It is hard to understand why a good clean young man with such high ambitions as your dear boy had should be taken. But God knows best. and we can be comforted with the fact that he has left his earthly home for a heavenly one where these is no pain or sorrow. Neither is there any more tears.

Donnie and I are together. I will do all I can to keep him cheerful again extending to you all my severest sympathy. I will close.

Yours As Ever
