Saturday, September 15th.
Just had tea and am "standing by" in case I have to go out and chase off some Hun who may be over the line having a look! It is darn hot and I sort of wish I could get up in the air and get cooled off!!
Later - Saturday Night.
It's eleven o'clock and I have had quite a busy but rather uninteresting day. Have been waiting all day on the ‘drome to go on a show but it never came off. I am on an early show, one of an escort for bombing machines going about twelve miles over the lines.
I am hoping to improve my machine by getting a new propeller put on, which I hope will improve the speed and climb. The engine revs. splendidly but the bus should do better and I'm hoping for the above results; I am a bit afraid, though, the engine may overheat. It won't do any harm to give it a trial though. It is a brand new engine; I told you of the chap who "did in" my other one.
Thanks very much for the 100 Players which came today and were very welcome. They are in a different class compared to the Gold Flake.
I was on a long patrol yesterday but there wasn't much doing; little "Archie" and the few Huns we saw kept well back of their lines and went further back when we showed signs of going into them even though we had a 70 mile breeze against us to face on the way home. I got home and landed when my engine cut out in the middle of the ‘drome and I did not have enough petrol to reaching the hangar. Cutting it a little fine, eh!
