Diary

April 10 - Up early to find it snowing and blowing like fury, but in spite of it all, will march over the gap, not having more than enough teams to take our baggage. All had to march. At 8 a.m. we struck westward over the ice of a large bay of Lake Superior. Very soon every man was wet to the knees, with snow and water under the snow, for 22 miles. Guide took us the wrong way, making our march three miles longer. We men just wanted to lynch him. Reached end of Gap No. 2 at 3 p.m., had dinner and took to flat cars again. Another cold ride for 43 miles. Arrived at big camp at Jack Fish Bay, beginning of Gap No. 3, a very comfortable camp.
