Dear Friend

So sorry I never saw you to say good-bye however I'll do the next best thing by writing hoping you will not be offended. Please say good-bye to Mrs. Passmore and Jennie for me. I met Mr. Passmore as I was coming to town to catch the train, so I said good-bye to him myself. I expect we will be going away soon for we have had to hand in our rifles today and they have started to give us our overseas equipment or harness as the fellows call it on account of there being so many straps. It is rumoured that we leave Niagara on the 7:30 AM Thursday morning so if that is the case we will soon be dodging torpedoes. Our captain has got married since last Saturday and he brought his wife over to the camp with him and the officers went and borrowed the band instruments and tried to play some tunes although some of them had never touched any of them before so you can guess what kind of a noise they made. The men all gathered round and called for a speech and Captain Marshall, that is his name said that he was sure he had never seen or head anything like it before, and we could easily believe him. They let us off without doing any drill this afternoon for some of the men were not in shape to drill, and we won't have much tomorrow for we have no rifles now. I would like very much to hear from you but if I don't hear from you before we get to England I will let you know my address. If you write my present address is

Pte J.H. Tripp
No. 135315. RD 74th Battalion
Niagara-on-the-lake.

Well I will close now so good-bye.
George
