Dear Mrs Thornton
I take the liberty of writing you a few lines to thank you for the nice present I received at Xmas I may tell you that all the boys of D Coy were sincerely sorry that Capt. Thornton could not come with us when we left and although there are a few of them gone to the front already the rest of us would only be to glad to be taken out to the trenches by him. Well if ever I get the chance of a shot at Kaiser Bill you can depend that I will not try to miss him. Wishing you a very happy New Year and thanking you again for the present you sent I remain
