Somewhere in France

September 12, 1917.

Dear Mrs. Johns.-

I do not wish to write this but knowing you would like to hear from one who was near to Earl at the time of his death and I being a chum of his ever since our coming to France and I assure you it meant a blow to me and also to all the other boys as he was one who was very much liked and respected by all; also the end was instantaneous so he had no suffering to endure, and I am glad to say died a hero. I also saw that his personal belongings were turned into Head-quarters and will be forwarded to you. So as a Pal of his accept my sincerest sympathy.

Yours sincerely
