Dear Mother

I hope you are all quite well, I received a nice letter from Hugh yesterday Xmas day. We had a very quiet time, we are still in rest Billets. Hugh told me that Vernon was attested and that Will was going down to try, I hope if they do have to serve that they will get into the artillery or the Army Serivce Corp, anything but the infantry, as long as you can help, out of the trenches it is a picnic as soon as I can but I guess we shall get letters and addressed to our old address all right. It will probably keep us out of the trenches for a month or so anyway because we have to learn the infantry drill.

That beef was fine and the cake was lovely too. I had a letter from Maggie last night, she writes to me every week now. I havent much news. Give my love to all & I hope you will have a happy and prosperous new year

Your loving son

Tommy
