Perth Regt.
Cdn Army CMF
9 Sept 44

Dear Mrs Woodgate.

You will have heard some time ago that your son Pte WC Woodgate gave his life for his country in an attack the Regiment was making on Aug 31.  He was instantly killed and we buried him with some of his comrades on a hill side near the spot where they fell.  Eventually they will rest in a permanent Canadian Cemetery with all the Cdns who fell in that area.  Your son had not been with the Regiment so very long but he had been with it in some of its toughest battles and had shown himself a good soldier and fine comrade.  He will surely be missed by his friends but you can be sure they will make certain is sacrifice in the cause of freedom will not be in vain.  He gave all that he had and you may justly be proud of him as we are here.

His personal effects will shortly be forward to Base and in due course will reach you.

May the God of all comfort comfort you in your sorrow and give you His peace.  May He give you in Christ a vision of that day when the shadows shall flee away and we shall be joined again with all whom we have love and lost awhile.

Yours sincerely
D Crawford Smith
