Dear Miss McCammon

As I was a very great friend of J.W.G Robinson’s who was one of the unfortunate ones in our Battalion during our stay on the Somme. I promised Joe should any thing happen to him that I would write to you and tell you.  Very sorry I haven’t been able to write before but I was wounded myself

Joe was a great favorite with us all especially with his men, they thought the world of him. He was very brave and went forward in the attack leading his men. He was, dear boy, shot through the heart by a machine gun bullet and as far as we know died instantly.

Joe and I joined the 60th the same day and were in the same Company and always together

I feel very deeply for you & his people must write his brother also.

I am sorry Miss McCammon that the occasion arose where as I had to write this letter, never thought – when he gave me your address that such a thing would ever happen. In losing Joe I lost one of my best friends.

Sincerely

Laurence W. W. Slack
