Dear Father

Your most welcome letter dated Oct 8th arrived this morning. The mail doesn't come very quick does it? but of course it lost at least a day by going to the Hospital. I certainly had a helmet on when I got hit, but a steel helmet might as well be paper when a bullet hits is, in fact might better, as in my case, the bullet went through and went to piece and though it only made a small mark on my head it made a very large hole where it went through the other side of the helmet, and two of the pieces glanced down off the inside and hit me on the shoulder. Now don't think I was foolishly having a look, as I happened to be in front of the trench at the time. This bullet wasn't the only one by a far way that came close. [?] JR Thomson wasn't in my company and I only know from a fellow that used to be in the [?] with me that he was killed. Cole was in my company, and I only heard he was killed, so possibly there was some mistake. I don't think there is any doubt about J.R.T. as this fellow told me that he J.R.T. got hit on the forehead with shrapnel, and died an hour or so afterwards. Did a fellow called A Bird drop you a line? I think I introduced you to him once at Shorncliffe. He was wounded a promised to drop you a line and tell you that he came down the line with me and that really my wounds were not at all serious.

About my automatic, a fellow named Bradford had it, and after about a month he was wounded and left it with a fellow named Brown [?] called by us "Buster." He had it, and got wounded just before I rejoined my battn. He took it to England so I believe, and I think he will be back before very long, as he wasn't wounded bad. He was hit in the arm too. Rather a coincidence that everyone that carried it got wounded in the arms isnt it? I don't know but I rather think "Buster" has the telescope too. You never told me whether you received that 2 pounds yet. Don't forget next time you write. The "motor-cycle" is rather a nice magazine, but I wouldn't trouble to find it, as one isnt so very interested in M-Cs when time is so many things to do.

Dont ever trouble to buy two papers of the same date to send me, as, if I can get the war news I am just about satisfied. We hear about everything of importance that takes place but never hear any details. If you can ever get a chance to send [?] or London [?] or London mail, I should like them, but I dont want you to buy them, as I can generally manage to see one now and again. You know the kind of papers. Remember you had one at Epsom. There are always lots of interesting reading in them, I dont mean papers of the "[?} [?]" Calibre, but I cant just recall the names of the [?[ decent journals that one can get you.

Had a letter from Doris yesterday and one from Aunt Frances.
