Dear Mother:

Last night I received a box from you with this writing paper and nice big cake. It certainly was very welcome as I had been looking for a box every night for the last two weeks and besides we have been expecting to be paid every day but we haven't got any yet. Just now we are resting in a town. I am in a small shack and we hunted around a got a small stove and some wood so we will be quite comfortable to-night. We expect to move on again in the morning. This morning we marched past some premier and a lot of big generals and so on. It has been quite cold for the past week and is snowing and blowing out. Now [?] I hope I get a box from you soon with those soxs in as these I have one are beginning to get over ripe. I suppose you have not been getting very much mail from me lately as it was too cold to write. We had to stamp around to keep warm. But it is nice beside this fire. I will now close with love to all at home.

From your loving son
Jay
