Dear Emma

Your letter of the 12th June to hand, also parcel mailed on May 24th. Much appreciated, especially the tobacco. Do not send any more shirts at present as I have a good stock and we have to travel light and I would hate to leave them behind. The tobacco is much appreciated, both by myself and others. Lots of people are polite to me now. After remarks about the weather they tap and empty pipe on their hands and look volumes.

Also received a letter from Jack at Suffolk hospital, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. He gathered three revolver bullets in a little raid, consisted of himself, two others, and an officer. I believe they were all wounded. I'll enclose the letter.

Yes, the 24th May seems a good time for my birthday parcel. It arrived here on the 7th July.

Have not heard from Sydney lately so do not know if he is in France or not. He expected to come shortly.

How are Bessie and her glad rags doing, and how did Philip pass the exams? Thank you very much for he strop and things. The boys all think you made good cake.
