January 30

Woke up in the morning of the 30th - went on deck to get my first look at England, also the destroyers which were escorting us into Plymouth harbor. We dropped anchor in the harbor at exactly 8:30 a.m. - remained about 3 hrs on board - then we were loaded on light ships and taken aboard the Great Western train for Thorncliffe which is about 7 hours run (225 miles). We arrived at Exeter about 2hrs later and a bunch of ladies met us at the station and served us hot buns and tea. At present we are about 20 miles from Exeter - Reached Thorncliffe at midnight. Thorncliffe is on the coast. Can see France from here on a nice clear day.
