Belgium,
December 5th, 1917

Dearest Mother:

Just a line as I am on duty. Sent you a letter on the 28th. Have had no Canadian mail this week but I am expecting one any day now, probably today. It is later than usual this week probably for an account of Christmas mail starting. Have no news as everything goes on as usual. We have had a touch of winter during the last few days. Everything is frozen up, and there is enough ice for the hell holes to carry a man. It is a welcome change and the mud problem is at least temporarily solved while the clear invigorating tang of the air is much more pleasant than the dank soggy atmosphere which we have had for the past five weeks. As you will see by the address we are still in Belgium but we hope to pull out in a day or two, We are having a pretty decent time of it now. Things are quite quiet and personally I have a splendid billlet and would not mind staying here while it keeps frozen. A good many of the boys however are not as fortunate as I am in their billets and they want to get away as soon as possible.

Am writing this at O.P. Am at the phone and in a small place which is somewhat crowded for writing so will say bye bye and write again in a few days, All well. I as usual am fine.
