Dear Mrs Evans,

I sincerely regret not having written to you before to acquaint you with the facts of your husband Capt Evans death. It is a very sad duty when ones friends are concerned, & he was a company commander very much respected in this Battn.

Your husband was killed in action during the attack made by the Battn on the 1st Sept at a location east of the Hurdicourt les Caynicoust - Dury Road, this road crosses the Arras - Cambrai Rd. about 10 miles W. by S.W. of Arras. He was hit by an enemy snipers bullet & death was instantaneous. He was buried at Sun Quarry. (Plot 1. Row. C. Grave 1) near village of Cherisy.

The officers & men of this unit wish me to express their deepest sympathy with you in your great loss. He was very popular with us & his absence is felt very much indeed.

Very sincerely yours
Edwin Day Major
