Monday, September 17th.
I was on a long patrol yesterday evening, got into two scraps and was chased down 2000 ft. by two Huns! At night I was so tired I could not see and went to bed after dinner as I had to be up at five this A.M. Got up then and flew to 4000 ft. when my engine boiled and I had to come down and try to get things right.
I went back to bed at 9.30 (very dud morning) and got up at noon - Have been feeling very tired, but the rest made a new man of me entirely. It stills looks "dud" but a good wind is blowing and may clear things up a bit this afternoon.
Suppose you see a lot of R.F.C. chaps at Hythe. I had dinner at the Imperial two or three times with N. C. Gordon when I was at Shorncliffe. There are some very pretty places about Hythe and if you should get a chance go and see Lympne Castle, it's very quaint and interesting. I had dinner there with Charlie Flemming's Mother when she had her Hospital there.
Later - September 17th.
It is clearing up a bit now, but the wind is very high and unfavourable in direction, so there probably won't be much doing - and here's hoping!
My machine is not right with this new engine just put in and it bothers me a lot. The mechanics are working away and putting on a larger radiator so I hope for better results soon. We have a Badminton Court here, but it's usually too windy to play. That's the trouble here, we lack exercise or means of getting it. I wish I could get a good saddle horse, that's the game to shake you up! If I can, I think I will go for a long walk this evening if someone will come with me.
