My dearest Mother

I received your second parcel this dinnertime containing the fruit and as our dinner turned out to be a very punk one (I mean by that an exceedingly rotten one) we were therefore very glad of the melon and enjoyed it A.1.

It is very very hot over here now and I shall be very glad to close this and get out of this hut and get under a hedge somewhere to cool off.

You needn't send that badge now as I have one. Sorry to trouble you but you can keep it for yourselves as representing me.

By the time you get this I expect to be in the line once more so I wish myself good luck again.

Now I must stop.

Yours very lovingly

Jack
