Dear Mrs. Shaver-
No doubt you have been informed of the death of your son Clifford by this time so this will not be surprise. All the boys of No. 3 platoon wish me to express their deep regret to you for the loss of so fine a son and comrade. He was well liked throughout the Battalion and I suppose the God of all wars had a better place for him. I suppose he has told you that he was in the Lewis gun section. I can assure you we were sorry to loose so fine a boy, always devoted to his duty and willing to do everything possible to help others along. I can give you some consolation in the fact that he did not suffer. He was killed instantly. I was not more than ten feet away from him when it happened. He was buried on Passchendale Ridge and if you wish for any further particulars let me know and I will be only too glad to help you all I can. Trusting this finds you in good health. I am yours truly,
410076 Sgt. John A. Delaney,
No. 3 Platoon, A. Co.
38th Can. Battalion.
