Dear Sister,

I received your letter some time ago glad to hear from you again. We are having pretty good weather here lately it rained a little last night for about an hour so there is lots of mud around to-day. I had to go to the divisional gas school yesterday to get a new helmet and was caught in the rain just got about enough to wet through. We are out of the line for a few days now expect to be going in again in a few days. We were in about a month and a half the last time

I had a letter from Ira a few days ago he is in the 5th Batt. I think they are quite a little way from here just now. I heard from Russ about a week ago he is trying to get me transfered to the 15th Batt. I suppose you have heard about Walter being wounded by this time. I got a card from him a while ago but I haven't heard from him since and he couldn't say whether he was very bad or where he was. Bill Wright came back[?] the battalion last night he went away about two months ago with trench fever. Fred Taylor is in the hospital at Liverpool I guess he was wounded pretty badly. Worse than we thought when he left here. I had a box from John Milne's mother yesterday. We are getting pretty good grub here now the last letter I had from Ira before he left England he was asking if they fed any better here than in England. I guess they got lots of fish there now. When we left they were getting fish about every other day and you could smell it for miles while they were cooking it and it wasn't a very appetizing smell either. I hope you will be able to make this out I am writing it on the top of a steel helmet. Well good bye
