April 11/44.
Dear Mother and Dad,
Well, here I am at St. Hyacinthe signal school. It sure is a nice place. There is only one thing wrong with it and that is MUD. There is mud everywhere here and you get it over everything. They say it is only temporary and I hope they are right. The food here is really good and a lot better than Chippawa. We have movies here everynight with admission 10¢. We were put on work parties when we came in and we will be on them for a week or two. We sleep in bunks here and I have a locker right next to my bunk. I am close to a stove so that it is good and warm at night.
We got into Montreal about noon and spent the whole afternoon there. We left on the train for St. Hye. at 7 oclock.
They are not as pusser [see Ed. note below] here as at Chippawa and we can wear a collar a lot longer.
It would be perfect if it wasn’t for the mud. It is like a swamp and it is impossible to keep clean.

Your loving son,
Malcolm.
P.S. I am writing this in pencil because I am temp. out of ink.
RMM.
[Ed. note: “pusser” is naval slang for a ship’s supply officer (purser), or used in relation to things issued by the purser’s office.]
