No 3 P.R.C. Bournemouth
England May 2 – 45
Dear Esther:
Just a few lines to say that Im at large again and its really a nice change! Mail did not reach me this year so I dont know if you are still in Tofield or not.
I escaped on the 6 of April, reached England on the 25 and have been in hospital since; am quite well now and expect to leave hospital this afternoon. I hope to sail for Canada in about three weeks, in the meantime I have much paper routine to go thru clothes to buy and two weeks leave. I was well looked after since meeting the British forces but was very thin and had been drinking swamp water result = an attack of dysentery and I now weigh about 143 lbs but am recovering my normal weight rapidly. The weather is fine and cool here and leaves full grown.
I have not met any old acquaintances or anyone from home, but hope to when I get around a bit. People here are buying flags presumably getting ready to celebrate the end of the European war.
The ex P.OWs are amusingly easy to identify around here, they all wear new clothes and service ribbons, wander slowly about like lost souls and go to bed early at night! however we’ll no doubt get re-accustomed to civilization after a while.
Also Ive lost the ability of writing more than a page so will close for today and more another time. I do hope this find you well, also your mother.
Sincerely,
Frank Dunn.
