Dear Dad,

I have yours of Aug 18th and also the first letter the Mater wrote from up there, as well as box. No 6.

Have not been able as yet to get the money from that order and will likely put a cheque thro the Royal London for $5000 to-morrow, will have them cable it, as I need some money right now.

I broke a strap lug off my silver wrist watch and the other was worn pretty thin, also the back cap, joint was eaten thro. I sent it to Eastbourne to have all three replaced in heavy 9K. as I think it will wear better. This with some other repairing is now ready and I am rather short. I also want some books. Will get them in “Everymans” if I can, and in pigskin back, if they have not gone up too much. I paid 3.50 ₣ for a cloth edition here the other day and think they are two shillings in Blighty.

That boat trip from the wharf must be fine, I hope some day to take it myself. It is nice to see a place so quietly and well conducted. Rather a surprise that [Reade?] and the Peaks were there, also the Beus. Or did you know they went up that way?

Our wet and windy weather continues, which is good for us, but I do hope it is better at the front or the poor devils in the line will be in mud.

Did you ever know that you could get a second growth of smaller cabbage on a root from which the original head had been cut? I am not sure that is right, but they tell me that over here, if you cut the head off, leaving as much of the root as possible and on the end of the root, make a cross (cut) ⨁ about an inch deep, thus dividing the end of it into four pieces, that two smaller heads will come on. We are trying it here, and I will let you know how it comes out. Of course it may be too cold in Canada. Our gardeners have just put out a bunch of cabbage plants and the rain is making them fairly jump along. It is surprising the vegetables we will get off this lot.

Suppose Nert is in it up to her neck now, but tell her to stay with it.

Love to all.
Your affectionate son,
Worth.
