In response to your enquiry of 31st. January I have been able to obtain a report from the O.C. “C” Company of this Battalion to which N. 116506. Pte. S.A. Winterbottom belonged as follows:

“Pte. Winterbottom's death occurred in action before Ypres on the morning of 6th November, 1917.

From what I can gather from his comrades who were with him at the time it appears he was struck by a heavy shell which burst in the trench in which he was located.

His death was absolutely instantaneous, consequently he was spared any suffering. As far as can be ascertained he was buried on the field of battle, the day following his death. It only remains for me to express my sympathy with his parents and family and to add that the lad was much  liked by both his officers and comrades.”

This soldier was one of the successful boxers of the Battalion and did much for its reputation in this line. He was a good sportsman and a good soldier.
