Death of Willian Appleby.

The announcement of the death in action of Private William Appleby was received in Ladysmith with profounr sorrow and regret. Although his residence here did not cover a great period of time he was known to nearly everyone and was held in high esteem by all. Of a generous disposition he never overlooked an opportunity to serve a friend. He was a schoolmate of Dr. Dier and lived with his friend during his residence in Ladysmith. Private Appleby was a son of Mr. W. Appleby, of Victoria, and went over[sea?] with the 103rd battalion. In England he was transferred to a bombing company and went over to France last November. Several leters received from him by friends in Ladysmith were of the most cheerful character.
