Dear Mrs Charters

Just have an hour or so before we take off so thought about you and yours up in Newcastle.

I want to thank you again for the way you took me in and made me feel so much at home. And maybe you think I didn’t like that home made cooking of yours! It sure was hard on the inner man coming back to this camp grub.

We have made two trips since we came back and they have been much less hazardous than the others even though the last one was on Essen. A town that was at one time the hottest target in the world. It seems as though Jerry is seeing the writing on the wall. And it’s about time too.

Give my regards to Uncle Willie and his family. Also to Tom, Olive and Johnnie who lives next door. Tell Olive to expect a surprise on our next leave. And also ask her not to be too strict on the pupils in her form!

Your grateful friend.
