My Dear Mother,

I really must write you tonight or you should think I am "missing" or "hung up on the wire" but as you see I am still going strong. Just got back from London where I have been an escort for a fellow going to prison for being absent without leave. I pity the poor devil but he gave me a chance to get away from this place and see the "Big Smoke" (London) again. Haven't heard from you for quite a while but as you know my mail goes all over the place before I get it.

Saw a bunch of the old 36th Boys in London on leave. They had some time in "Ypers". Guess the old Batter is altogether changed. I have thanked my lucky stars that I missed that scrap. You know I was lucky to get gassed.

Have seen a bunch of the Truro boys in the 185th. They are all asking after Father. Hope he was decent to them and not too regimented. How is everybody? As Hat L says I guess the Sears have cashed in.

Well I must stop now. Best love to all the kidlets and heaps to yourself Mother.

Your loving son,
