Diary

July 31 - Off by the 7:45 a.m. train for Toronto. Met Miss Murdock on the train on her way back to Winnipeg. Arrived in Toronto at 10:15 and made my way to Artie's office. Back to civilization once more. Artie took me out to lunch at Coleman's. After lunch Artie and his brother Dick got into an argument in the office over what regiment led the charge at Batoche: Artie said the Midland, Dick said the Grenadiers of Toronto. Artie said, here's Walter, he was there and knows. Dick says "I don't care whether he was or not, the Grenadiers led that charge at Batoche."

At about 5 we left on a Queen & Dundas car for 99 Given St., and when we got there Nellie, Walter and little Cecil were at the front window watching for us. And there was Eliza's grin of welcome as she brought in the dinner. So it was all a cheery welcome home.

I was back where I started out last March to do my part in putting down a rebellion that should never have happened. But it did happen and now it is all over.

The Northwest Rebellion of 1885.
