Diary

May 19 - Arrived at Prince Albert at 9:30 a.m. and relieved the garrison. Found that as soon as word had arrived that Batoche had been taken by us the Indians had called off the siege and skipped to parts unknown. The Prince Albert garrison of volunteers and about 50 of the Mounted Police had fortified the town with walls of cordwood and trenches. Everyone spoke highly of the plucky wives and daughters of the town. They did their part, including Mrs. David Rogers and two sons, even to arming themselves with shotguns, pistols, even clubs and axes, ready to help defend their houses. Camp up before dark.
