LETTER RECEIVED FROM ARTHUR DAVIDSON

The following letter from Arthur Davidson to Ronald Norris was written from "Number 3" general hospital, France, and mailed from Sheffield, England on May 15.

"Just a few lines to let you know that I am getting along all right. I have been unfortunate enough to get a slight wound or so and am at the hospital. I leave here for England tomorrow. I don't know whether I will be allowed to return to the firing line or not because of my eye, but I have asked permission to do so, as I am not wanting to return home before the end of the war. We had just been in the trenches for ten days and four days immediately behind and had taken up a position in the trenches behind to straighten the line when we were shelled from eight o'clock in the morning until dark, but I am glad to say we stuck to the trenches.

"I am one other fellow were alone left out of the machine gun section, the rest of the crew being very badly wounded. However before we left we had the pleasure of turning the gun loose on the enemy while the other boys sent them five rounds rapid to show them we were not all dead.

"We lost about 150 out of the two companies in the trenches, dead and wounded, the latter including our colonel and four officers. As I will be in England soon I will post this on my arrival. Give my kind regards to everybody.

P.S.- Since arriving in England I am told that there are only about 100 of the Pats left.
