France. March, 14. 1918.

My dear Dad:

At last some mail has arrived. One from you and Fern and Metcalf and I expect some more will be in soon. Also got a parcel from Fern containing biscuits and candy and some sox & things. I forget who she said the sox is there from. Mrs Simpson I think. Will you tell Fern to thank her for me whoever it was.

Your letter was just a short note enclosing an Abitibi clipping. I am glad things are going along in good style. Thanks very much for the fifty but we'll have to leave that until I get back I guess. It is awfully good of you to offer it to me.

Things have been happening just lately. You remember I wrote you the other day saying I had been brought down in a scrap. Went out yesterday and was brought down again with three [?]. It was my fault absolutely and I will be more careful in the future. I certainly have been damn lucky during the past week as I have had about thirty holes in my bus at different times and none in me. We have to carry one bomb whenever we go up now. Orders were yesterday to drop them on W---. Three of us on patrol and the other two dropped theirs on M--- instead (They probably were not sure where they were). They then started home but I went on to W--- alone and dropped mine and got chased to the lines by five Pfalz. Engine went dead and I glided home. However I am none the worse off and have had a good experience and will be more careful in the future and stick to the formation for as long as we are together the Huns will not attack unless they greatly outnumber us.
D.P. promised to send home photos to you. Did they arrive ok?

Let me know more of your plans re California. I want you to take care of yourself and know that the cold weather certainly is hard on you.
If you have not heard from me very often lately you can put it down to the longer days. Whereas we used to be finished for the day at 4.30pm we fly now until seven and that just about gives us time to get cleaned up for dinner which lasts till about nine with a little rough house afterwards and as we are getting up earlier every morning we are usually glad to get in bed.

I am getting alone O.K. and my time out here is half up now. Will try hard to swing my Home Establishment in Canada. However that is a few months away yet and will know more about it later.

Love to all

Gord
