Dear Mother.

I received your letter to day saying you had received my letter [?] I also got a letter yesterday and the parcel. When I saw it I thought you must have sent the piano or something like that. It certainly was great to get some sweet things to eat. I nearly made myself sick. The lump sugar was fine I have sweet tea now all the time I take a couple of lumps in my pocket, The socks are OK. I need them long to hold my pants inside. I don't know how you thought of every thing. The cake as scrumptious you know what that is dont you. I was just busy writing to Aunt Jun when it came so I told her about it. She writes to me often. I think she is just first class. She was awful good to me. She is going to give me a diamond stick pin that is about 100 yrs old. It belonged to Dads uncle. The one whose cane we gave in the trunk. I think he was a Sergeant major. He brought the pin from Malta I think. So I'm to get it when ever I get going home or out of this army. I was sorry aunt Jun couldn't get away from work. She is like dad she works her head off. While I was there she went to work at 6 AM and quite at 5 PM and brought enough work home to keep her busy till 10 PM. One day she wanted off an hour to come around with me in the after noon so she went to work at 5 AM instead of 6 I was mad when she told me but she just laughs. I bought a broach with my batallion badge on it and sent it to her it is quite nice. I hope she likes it. I'm going to send a few things I have to you people in a few days. It is nearly Hannahs birthday so I'm going to send you all a little present.

I got the pictures of the May queen OK and thought they were fine. I sent them on to Aunt Jun. I had my picture taken a couple of Days ago. I will send it as soon as I get them. That will be next week sometime. I wish you would take a few snaps and send them to me. Well mother I haven't much more news at present so I will close with love to Hannah Charles Dad & yourself

Your loving son

John

PS. Tell Hannah I write to Horace. He has wrote me a couple of time he is going to visit me if he can. will write again soon

John
