Dear Old Friends,

I just heard a few minutes ago of your dear boy being killed at the front. Oh how my heart goes out to you in sympathy in your sorrow. I know words of sympathy fail to ease your bleeding aching hearts but I felt I must write & tell you anyhow. So many of the dear boys are laying down their life for us. It is hard to understand why so many of our best and bravest are called to sacrifice their lives. What would we do at such times if it were not for our trust in God that his ways are right.

In the course of right & justice to have given up life is truly a noble sacrifice. I do love to think of the loved ones gone away with us in spirit - that they are with Christ & so near to us. Dont think of him as being out on the battle field - only his body lies there. his soul at home with Jesus.

Dear Mrs. Ellis how I would like to be with you to try to cheer you in your loneliness & sorrow but I know you have learned to go in your every time of need, to one who can comfort you as no earthly friend can do.

Mrs & Mrs. Hanna join in sending sympathy & love. Mrs. Ralph Adams got seriously hurt getting off the train at Mtn. Station from being at Ottawa fair & they are taking her to the hospital [?] she has never been able to come home since.

I am thinking of selling my farm and going to South Mtn, to live, so changes come all around. I hate to leave Hulbert but can't stay on farm always.

I have been having an awful time with falling [?]. I have to go to North Williamsburg once a week to have it attended to. The people around are [?].

Yours in sympathy,
Lettie Irvine
