My darling girl

Got two of your letters yesterday dated 28th & 31st, you mention the cottage you have rented but as your previous letters have not yet caught me up am puzzled to know where it is, however, I guess it must be OK. And so Gwladys has another daughter, by jove that's beating us out old girl. Am glad to hear Frank is having such a good time with his wheel also Eric with his engine can picture him having a great time. Surprised to hear people think Gwladys like me I always thought she favoured you, who do they think Eric is like, the mystery as Dr Clingan used to say. The Battalion moved to Reserve last night, we are billeted in large chalk caves near a town that has been mentioned quite a lot of late & which gets heavily shelled, its quite a novel experience being here about 80 feet below ground, these caves would hold about 5 to 6 thousand men; parts of it are lit by electric light & remainder by candles. We expect to make another move tomorrow don't know where & if I did I couldnt tell, one has to be very careful what they write, but I'll sure have a lot to tell you when I see you again. Am sorry you don't like the photos, by the bye would like to have a photo of you & the kiddies, now go at once & get them taken no darned philandering. And so Will & Eunice are moving to Gwernaffield an sure the walk ea[ch] day will do Will a lot of good.

Well sweetheart don't know what number this letter is but have kept my promise so far. Fondest love to kiddies & yourself.

Your loving, Jim
