Camp Hughes Oct 5 / 16 9 AM Thursday Dear Betty: No letter yesterday - have just returned from a night in the trenches under active service conditions, consequently I am feeling a little tired - & you may have a guess that it was not very warm, though we might have had a worse night it was a nice clear night but cold it froze pretty hard. I received the watch at last [?] good time. I hear the chaplain has been appointed for the 222 in fact was appointed right from the start - they certainly are a lot of grafters he is one of their friends of course the oppinion however is I have said before I believe that shall be better off as I am, am not worrying anyway. No word yet of date of our departure but as I said before I will send you a wire as soon as we are notified - so don't believe any reports you hear the 184th are still here. Did your slabs come yet. About mine, if you look in the tool box you will find two or three traps you'll have to keep right after them. Did you get my letter telling you that I had made the assigned pay $25.00 in place of $20.00? I had a nice letter from McKinnon, he said that he was making a special trip to W'pg to see Premier Norris, to get him to use his influence on my behalf - but I don't want that kind of thing I prefer to make my own way. He is quite willing to act in the capacity of executor etc, I shall write Mr. Kennedy so that when I come home, I can get everything fixed up speedily - well so long dear, I shall go & have a sleep on or try best love & kisses to yourself & my kiddies.
