January 17, 1916

Left Portage 8:25 p.m. on Jan. 17, got a rousing send-off, the 10th CMR Band being in attendance. Shook hands with about a thousand people though they were strangers to me.

Arrived Winnipeg at 10 p.m. and wasn't allowed to leave the train, was placed on duty as train guard, a twenty-four hour tour of duty. Pulled out of Winnipeg at 6 a.m. 18th, had a good feed at nine - arrived in Kenora at 11 a.m. Sent Es. A card and gave it to a home guard to post. Played five hundred most of the way down to Fort William. Arrived there at 8 p.m. 18th. After leaving Fort William we were jolted around all night, the roughest road I ever travelled on.
