June 9 - Off early on the march north to join forces with Gen. Strange, on the hunt for Chief Big Bear and his warriors, the Cree tribe. Prospect bright for another fight? A pretty hot day, a dust trail over open prairie. We all suffered from thirst; no water. Two of us scouted ahead and found water: a spring in a small timber bluff. How the boys did drink. They were sure thirsty.

Reached Beaver Lake by 5 p.m. All had a swim and a good supper, then into blankets for the night; slept under the stars. Then a rider arrived with orders for us to march back to Frog Lake and garrison the place. What the hell next?
