Mrs R.J.B. Crombie
58 Hampton Court Apartments,
TORONTO.

Dear Mrs Crombie,

It is my deep regret that I have to inform you of your son's Lieutenant V.R.A. Crombie's death.

He died of wounds received October the 11th when we wear pushing towards DENAIN.

On being a casualty, we had him sent out where he was operated on immediately, and the surgeons expected him to recover.

During the time your son was with the Battalion, both as a private in the machine gun section, and later as an officer, his work was of the highest order, he at all times exhibiting a keen interest in his men, and proving himself a magnificent leader.

His body was laid to rest in a recognized Military Cemetery, and his grave is receiving careful attention; being marked by a cross, with his rank, name, and date of decease.

His personal effects, also a photograph and location of his grave will be forwarded to you in due course through the usual channels.

All ranks of the BATTALION join with me in extending to you our heartfelt sympathy in your sad bereavement.

I remain,
Yours sincerely,
Signed H.C. HATCH
Major,
Commanding 19th Canadian Battalion
