Thurs. Aug. 9 -

About 4:30, the 2nd Div. made a trench raid and found Fritz's lines empty. Our heavy guns put over a very heavy barrage but our field guns were silent. The front was all lit up with Fritz's star shells, flares and lights. Went down to Bully Grenay for a bath and spent the afternoon down there. It was pleasant to get down into a village again and the day was fine. Late in the evening, I had to help pull the ration waggon out of a ditch and got to bed about 1 o'clock.
