Dear Mother:-
Received yours of Jan 6 tonight. Am beginning to get a letter once in a while since it is coming direct. I suppose I must resign myself to losing the mail addressed to the signals.
You say you recollect Max Layton but cannot recollect Lamont Baker. Don't you remember the fellow who lived next door to Mrs. Sears when we were staying there just after coming to Truro. He & I used to play together a lot. A few days ago I rode to Rexensart, not far from here, where the 85th are & saw a bunch of old school mates that I don't think you would know. But you knew McGee didn't you who worked in the P.O. - I saw him.
Had a letter from Doug Watson (Corporal Watson) He is with the 1st Division and has been in Germany about a month. They are in Belgium now.
I have heard since from fellows in his battalion that Ralph was wounded at Amiens in the hand.
If Herman was not in France at the time of the Armistice, he will never come now.
Didn't I ever tell you that Foaler Murray got his discharge at Halifax as he wasn't strong enough for the army.
You asked me whether I had a cold or not. Really I'd feel lonesome without a cold.
Today I was about 25 kilometers to the ration dump and back again and the roads were very icy. We left at 8:30 pm. I was nearly frozen but tonight I got warmed up by walking about 8 kilos to the ymca. One of my mules fell today & cut itself that I can't put a saddle on it for a week or so. It was lucky I got my legs clear of him or it might have been me on the sick list instead of him. I had some great fun with him the Sunday. I had him out in a field riding him bareback for some exercise when three civilians came up and all said they were good riders & wanted to try him. Well they all had a try and he would take them about 50 feet and chuck them over his head. He chucked one of them 10 feet into the air. But he is a very nice moke in spite of his eccentricities. He has never thrown me yet though he has tried awfully hard at times.
We expect to go to England in two or three months.
No one is getting leave to Bruxelles now so I'm out of luck.
We spend a lot of time shining our helmets for inspection every Wendesday. There is one tomorrow. Most afternoons we go for an exercise ride through the country.
Well I guess I'll close now.
Lovingly Ludlow
